- Film composer Ennio Morricone was one of the most well-known composers in the last few decades. He revolutionized film music in a variety of genres, especially, but not limited to, Westerns.
- Morricone was a strong supporter of the use of orchestral music in cinema. In a 2015 article in The Guardian, he claimed that film directors were “cutting costs” and “degrading their films” with synthetic music. “Electronic instruments flatten everything. You might be able to do everything with them, but the result is quite similar– a kind of standardized sound.”
- My argument was directly against Morricone’s view: Synthetic music isn’t all bad depending on the context of the media, and some synthesized film scores and television themes are well-designed.
